Microsoft Gave up Warning on Google Ad??

Microsoft Gave up Warning on Google Ad
=========================

Apparently, Google users simply do not care about their own privacy. Microsoft has been running its own campaign to demonstrate what Google does to private data. The software giant believes that if people knew how their personal data is used they would turn to Bing instead. However, it turned out that most Google users are quite happy to let their personal details hit the streets.

In the meanwhile, Stefan Weitz, Microsoft senior director of online services, was trying to put a brave face on for the campaign, claiming that part of the public education program was over. However, Scroogled website is still alive, and this statement doesn’t necessarily mean that Microsoft has abandoned the tagline and the message of the campaign altogether.

The idea first came up from an opinion poll made by the Roper Center for Public Opinion Research. They discovered that 70% had no idea that this practice of scanning emails took place, and they didn’t like what they knew. Microsoft hoped that by increasing public awareness, they can make people hit that cognitive speed bump and reconsider their use of Google’s services.

Apparently, it became fairly clear that getting people to pack in Google was no easier than trying to get others to give up smoking. Microsoft explained that the Scroogled campaign has launched a dialogue which shows how much Internet users care about their privacy, as well as how strongly they feel about Google scanning through their personal emails to sell adverts.

Thus far, more than 3.5 million people visited Scroogled.com, and more than 114k signed a petition to ask the search giant to stop monitoring their Gmail accounts. Microsoft promised that the campaign will continue as long as Google keeps violating privacy.
